04 / Los Angeles

“Los Angeles can serve as a reminder that real vitality always had to confront a divergent reality. It continues to draw an active counterculture willing to beat its own path against the traffic just like in the past. Progressive runaways in the footsteps of those seeking to free body and mind. People who don’t just want to fit in, but rather find what makes them mindful in a blindly spinning world. Los Angeles continues to be a lab for modern ideas, maybe more so than ever because it has to. Chasing happiness on revolving rubber or in digital illusions does not really work, even in HD. We found some alternative answers right on this city’s tarmac. They won’t solve all our problems but at least they are a step forward and not a dead end. Welcome to Los Angeles.”

03 / Portugal

“Running is one of our primal activities besides eating, sleeping, and sex. For survival, humans had to both chase and escape. Runaway started 2018 by exploring the latter. After searching the souls of two of our favorite cities, we felt it was about time to search our own. While the West used to carry the promise of a new age for all seekers of alternatives, Runaway is heading east from Brooklyn—time for a new direction in a changing world. Right across the ocean in Portugal we found a great spot for more than California dreaming. While the sheltered Mediterranean draws people who are ready to retire, Portugal's windswept Atlantic Coast is perfect for those who need space to breathe. It not only produces some of Europe's biggest waves and has helped define a unique country, it’s also a great place to run.”

NEW BALANCE  x R U N A W A Y
This Is Boston

Boston’s roads have grit without being square. They are paved with more than a fair bit of ambition. As a result, the city’s streets carry a lot of history, but no welcome signs for those looking to stand still. The ‘old’ England found out first. It’s no coincidence that those looking to give others a good run for their money have left deep marks on this place—a culture which has given legs to strong minds from all over the world. More so than anywhere else.

Just watch how 26 miles turn this city all out. The city also keeps coach, Mark Coogan, and Team New Balance on track. After making her marathon debut in Boston last year running a 2:38, team member Liz Costello has used the tough New England winter to take on London this year.

Other runners are not much easier to catch along the scenic Charles River. We just about caught up with Christopher Battoo who, five years after running his first marathon, is closing in on a 2:30. You need to follow people like him if you want to find the city’s urban soul.

The city’s neighborhoods are a patchwork as varied as the personalities who run them. Creatives like Colin Gould found their urban canvass in Cambridge. Charlestown also provides space to both use your legs and move your mind. The streets of South Boston keep the city on its toes. There is also Back Bay, and a lot more beyond the finish line. Colin has dedicated a running singlet to each part of town. Although they all compete for distinction, they will rally around the spirit of this city on Patriot’s Day.

02 / London

"Similar to Runaway's home across the Atlantic, London has seen its share of darker clouds recently. Watching this city run day and night will reassure you that it not only has the grit to prevail, but it will also continue to inspire and create our future.

London's running community is as much of a patchwork as its endless streets. These provide a common ground for all and are a seedbed for independent creativity wherever you run."

NIKE x R U N A W A Y
Marathon Issue / Twenty Six Miles - NYC

"Maybe it's because so many of New York's residents ran away from somewhere else that twenty six miles feels like a pilgrimage into the soul of the city. Across the five boroughs, you feel NYC's heartbeat in its streets, where so much of its creativity and energy is rooted. Those twenty six miles that go right through the birthplace of street culture are about so much more than the finish line. This magazine wants to be your guide to the miles and the people beyond Central Park, and to share the spirit of all those who run this city."
